How much to take, and how to take Rooibos as a Tea/beverage

Adele Du Toit, spokesperson for the South African Rooibos Counsel recommends 6 cups of Rooibos Tea a day for optimal replenishing of critical antioxidants.
Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) is actually a herb and not a tea plant. It is indigenous to the Cederberg Mountains of South Africa – about three hours North of Cape Town. It has twigs, not leaves, and is called a Tea based on the way it taken. Rooibos tea has a somewhat sweet nutty flavor when taken neat (the way I prefer it – no milk or sugar). It can also be taken like English tea, with milk and sugar, or otherwise just sweetened.

Rooibos is very palatable and the best tasting of all teas and herb beverages taken with no milk or sugar. It can be enjoyed the warm, cold or as ice tea. And talking about “taste” Rooibos is most versatile. It goes well with a bit of mint or lemon, orange, passionfruit, mango or apple or a combination of flavors.

You can easily prepare a cup of Rooibos tea. Just put one sachet of Rooibos tea in a cup of boiling hot water and steep for about four to five minutes. It doesn’t actually get stronger tasting when steep longer. I actually prefer let my brew get cold, leaving the sachet in, even over night.
Rooibos is also very economical in the sense that it can be kept in the fridge for up to two weeks without spoiling. Also, one standard tea bag can easily make two cups of healthy Rooibos tea.

A great recipes suggested by Adele DuToit:

“Rooibos and berry iced tea:

8 rooibos tea bags or flavored rooibos of your choice
1 cinnamon stick
4 whole cloves
6 thin slices of ginger
4 cups boiling water
4 cups hundred percent berry juice, chilled
Lemon juice to taste

Place teabags, spices and ginger in a large glass jug and pour over boiling water. Stir well and allow to cool for about two hours. Remove teabags, ginger and spices. Add berry juice to the tea and season with lemon juice to taste. Enjoy cold with ice and mint leaves, fruit and lemon”.

Where to obtain Rooibos Tea?

Rooibos Tea is generally available in bigger grocery stores like Walmart, Target and the such as well as online. I have found that Walmart tenders a large variety of brand names at most competitive prices. Of all the different brand names Twinings has turned out to be the best tasting for me.

“Green” Rooibos Tea

“Green” Rooibos Tea …? It may sound like an anomaly but it is actually the same herb that is made ready for consumption before it goes through the traditional fermentation process. It is in fact, as mentioned by Metaphoric Labs “steamed or heated to prevent oxidation and then rolled and dried”. This version has a slightly lighter color and slightly different taste and also very palatable. Also, like traditional Rooibos, it is without the typical astringent taste of black and green tea.

Further more, Green Rooibos Tea has much higher “100 times more antioxidants and 10 times more aspalathin than regular fermented Rooibos tea” as per Metaphoric Labs.
